CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team swept all nine matches as it captured a 7-0 win over Brandeis in its home opener on Friday evening at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
The fifth-ranked Athenas move to 2-1 on the season after its first Division III dual, previously falling to Division I UC Riverside and defeating Division II Point Loma. No. 23 Brandeis suffers its first defeat as it slips to 3-1 on the season.
Rebecca Kong and
Lindsay Eisenman opened the match with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, and
Rachel Garton and
Shifali Dinesh earned a 6-3 win at No. 2.
Ananya Sriniketh and
Bell Zhou capped off the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win at No. 3.
Leah Baroudi had a dominant win at No. 5 singles for the second point for the Athenas, winning 6-0, 6-2, and
Celestina Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 to put the Athenas ahead 3-0.
The clinch came when Eisenman picked up a 6-4, 2-1 win at No. 1 singles, which came when Rebecca Suarez had to retire with an injury after battling in a tight first set, and gutting out the first three games of the second while limping before deciding not to continue.
Sriniketh then captured a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3, and Kong prevailed 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 to give CMS a 6-0 lead. Zhou had the longest match of the day before earning a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 4 to finish the shutout.
CMS will return to action at the ITA Indoor Nationals next weekend.
