LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 200-yard medley relay team of
Annika Sharma,
Elyse Newlands,
Sun Young Byun, and
Madeleine Kan set a new SCIAC record with a 1:41.58 to take first place on the first day of the SCIAC Championships at the East Los Angeles College Swim Center.
Simone Sabeeh,
Meilan Uyeno and
Josie Kearns also went 1-2-3 on the one-meter dive for CMS, which earns a 151-129 lead over Pomona-Pitzer after the first day of competition.
The medley relay team's time of 1:41.58 edged out the previous SCIAC record of 1:41.67, which was set two years ago by Pomona-Pitzer. The Athenas were able to defeat the Sagehens (1:42.04) by .46 to earn 40 points towards the team total.
Newlands put CMS in front with a 28.24 leg during the breaststroke, setting a new CMS record for the fast 50-yard breaststroke relay split (passing the mark of 28.33 set by national champion Annie Perizzolo in 2010). Kan then finished it off with a 22.59 freestyle leg, .2 faster than her Sagehen counterpart, and edging her own CMS record for a 50-yard relay split by one-hundredth of a second from last year.
CMS closed out the day with a new program record and a second-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay, as Byun,
Mackenzie Mayfield,
Avalon Sanders and
Katy Shaw clocked a 7:28.93, beating the previous program-best of 7:29.28 set two years ago at SCIACs (Byun and Shaw were also on that relay, along with Augusta Lewis and Ella Blake) Mayfield's split of 1:51.20 on the second leg places her third all-time at CMS.
Sabeeh edged out Uyeno in a close battle for the one-meter title between two Athena teammates, as Sabeeh finished with 450.65 points and Uyeno had 443.40. Kearns made it a podium sweep for CMS by just two-tenths of a point, earning 421.05 points to edge out Ava Balanon of Caltech with 420.85.
Day two of the SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships will get underway tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., with prelims in the 50 free, 500 free and 200 IM.
