INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Sun Young Byun broke her own program record in the 200-yard butterfly with a 2:00.15, surging up from seventh place at the midway point of the race to earn a runner-up finish, to highlight the third day of the NCAA Division III Championships for CMS Women's Swimming and Diving.

After three days, CMS has moved into the top 10 in ninth place with 121 points, in a tight battle with Pomona-Pitzer, which has 125 points. NYU (375), Emory (319.5), Kenyon (294) and Denison (239) represent the top four.

Byun earned first-team All-America honors for the second time this week in an individual race, after earning sixth place in the 100 fly yesterday, when Madeleine Kan earned the national championship. Byun was also part of a first-team All-America 400-yard medley relay team on Wednesday, which finished in eighth place.

In the 200 fly, Mackenzie Mayfield also earned the last spot in the evening session by coming in 16th place in prelims, and then won the consolation heat in 2:02.00 to surge up to a ninth-place finish and earn second-team All-America honors.

Byun hit the 100-yard mark of the 200 fly in 58:41, which put her almost a full second behind the second-place holder at the time, Elodie Mitchell of Emory (57.54). She was also .32 out of sixth place, which was held by Amelia Stevenson of Kenyon.

At the 150-yard split, Byun moved up to fifth in 1:28.95, which was only .51 out of second (Maeve Kelley of Amherst), while defending national champion Nicole Ranile touched in 1:26.92, a body length ahead of the field. Ranile won in 1:58.51, but Byun closed the gap another half-second over the final 50, and moved up to second, edging Kelley by .09 for the second-place spot on the podium and breaking her own CMS record by almost one second (2:01.01 at the SCIAC Championships).

The Athenas also had two second-team All-America performances in the relays, with the 200 medley relay of Byun, Elyse Newlands, Mayfield and Kan coming in 12th place, while Avalon Sanders, Katy Shaw, Mayfield and Byun were 11th in the 800 free relay.

The final day of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships will take place tomorrow, with Kan in the 100 free, Shaw in the 1650, Newlands in the 200 breast, Simone Sabeeh in the three-meter dive, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team closing it out.
