INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The 400-yard medley relay team of
Nika Makhervaks,
Elyse Newlands,
Sun Young Byun and
Madeleine Kan earned first-team All-America honors and broke a CMS program record, and Kan broke her own 50-yard freestyle record with the first sub-23 second swim in program history, to highlight the performance of the CMS women's swimming and diving team on the first day of the NCAA Division III Championships.
CMS stands in eighth place with 35 points after the first day, as Newlands also scored points in the 200 IM with second-team All-America honors, finishing 13th, joining Kan (ninth) as second-team All-America winners.
The 400 medley relay team swam a 3:43.56 in prelims to break the program record, which the Athenas established at the SCIAC Championships last month. Newlands had the second-fastest 100-yard breaststroke split in program history at 1:02.82, behind only national champion Annie Perizzolo in 2010.
Kan (pictured below) broke the CMS record in the 50 free at the SCIAC Championships with a 23.15, then broke it again in prelims on Wednesday morning with a 23:08, finishing ninth. In the evening, she came in with a 22.93 to win the consolation heat, which put her alone in the sub-23 club in program history, and was actually the fourth-fastest time in the evening session.
Newlands swam a 2:03.72 in the 200 IM to take 13th place, which also moves her up to fourth in program history.
Mackenzie Mayfield was 20th in prelims (2:05.06) and Byun was 22nd in 2:05.27.
Katy Shaw took 6.04 seconds off her top time of the season in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking a 4:58.27. That time placed her 17th, one spot out of qualifying for the evening session, by a margin of just one-hundredth of a second. Shaw will be competing in the 200-yard freestyle and the 1650 during the rest of the NCAA Championships.
The second day of the NCAA Championships gets underway tomorrow morning, beginning at 7 a.m. Pacific time, with the 200 free, 100 fly, and 200 yard freestyle relay. The 100 fly will feature Byun (seeded third with a 54.22) and Kan (seeded third with a 54.30) seeking another trip onto the podium.
Simone Sabeeh will also be in action in the one-meter dive.
