INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -
Madeleine Kan of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team won the national championship in the 100-yard butterfly with a program-record time of 53.57 seconds on the second day of the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday.
Kan had the fastest time in prelims, setting a new program record at the time with a 53.81, the first sub-54 second swim in program history. She also broke her personal best of 54.30 by just short of a half-second (.49), which she set to win the SCIAC Championship last month.
Sun Young Byun, who held the previous program 100 fly record (54.22), also had the fourth-fastest time in prelims, and
Mackenzie Mayfield qualified for the final spot in the evening session with a 16th place finish.
In the championship final, Kan swam another .24 faster than her prelim time to finish in 53.57, which also broke the SCIAC record held by Pomona-Pitzer's Alex Turvey (53.63). Kan built a lead over the first 75 yards, and then held off Haley Zelen of St. Benedict's by .31 to win the title.
Kan also finished ninth in the 50 free yesterday, swimming the first sub-23 second time (22.93) to win the consolation heat and earn second-team All-America honors.
Byun added a sixth-place finish in the 100 fly to earn first-team All-America honors for the second year in a row, after also finishing sixth last year, while Mayfield earned 12th with a 55.58 by coming in fourth in the consolation heat.
Kan becomes the first Athena to win a national title since Augusta Lewis captured the 400 IM title in 2023.The swimming and diving team has now had at least one national champion in each of the last five years, with Frank Applebaum winning the 200 fly in 2022 and 2023, and Lucas Lang winning the 1650 in 2024 and 2025 for the Stags.
After the strong showing in the 100 fly, CMS stands in 10th place overall at the championships with 73 points after two days.
CMS will be back in action for day three of the NCAA Championships tomorrow, with Byun and Mayfield in the 200 fly, where they are seeded fourth and 13th, respectively.
Elyse Newlands will be in the 100-yard breaststroke, and the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay will be in action as well.
