Athenas Softball Drops Two Close Decisions to Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman softball team used a pair of big sixth innings to take 6-5 and 4-1 wins over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday at Hart Park.

With the losses, CMS now stands at 4-4-1 on the year, including 2-3 in the SCIAC. Chapman moves to 5-1 on the season, all in conference games.

The Athenas trailed 3-1 late in the opener, but came back to tie it 3-3 in the top of the sixth, as Delanie Stevens singled to score Megan Kho in the fifth, and Gaby Robel singled and came around to score on a pair of Chapman errors in the sixth.

The Panthers then responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to surge in front, and still led with two outs and nobody on in the seventh before the Athenas nearly rallied. Alex Wedemeyer and Avia Tuguldur hit consecutive singles to keep CMS in it, and Robel was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Rachel Sapirstein then singled up the middle to score two runs, and advanced to second on the throw to make the score 6-5 with runners on second and third. Rose Malen was called out of the bullpen, and was able to get the final out to secure the narrow win.

Malen started the second game against Hannah Adams, and the two were locked in a 0-0 tie through four, with Adams retiring the first 12 Chapman batters in order. CMS broke through when Riley Cooper led off the fifth with a pinch-hit triple, and Megan Kho plated pinch runner Lexie Stinson with a sacrifice fly.

Chapman, though, was able to score four times with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. Robel led off the seventh with a single, but Malen was able to retire the next three batters to secure the doubleheader sweep.

Giselle Lai and Robel were each 2-for-3 in the nightcap, while Sapirstein was 2-for-4 in the opening game.

CMS will return to action when it completes its suspended game with Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow at noon at Athena Field. The Athenas will be batting in the bottom of the eighth with one out and a runner on second, after the game was halted on Feb. 14 due to darkness.
