Stags Baseball Splits with Occidental in Road Doubleheader

EAGLE ROCK, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team picked up a 13-4 win over Occidental in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, but the Tigers bounced back to take the nightcap 10-3 in the SCIAC openers for both teams.

CMS now stands at 3-2 with the split, including a 2-1 series win over Mary Hardin-Baylor on the road two weekend ago. Occidental now stands at 5-3 with the split.

CMS opened with five runs in the first in the opener, keyed by two-run homers from Alex Henderson and Blaise Heher to take control right away.

Jasper Shue added a third two-run homer to make it 7-0 in the fourth, and the Stags stretched the lead to 11-0, before settling for the 13-4 victory. Everyone in the starting line-up had at least one hit, with Didrickson reaching in all five plate appearances (2-for-2 with two walks and a hit-by-pitch, and Shue and Martin each adding two hits as well.

Kody Perry threw five shutout innings and struck out six to get the win. Aiden Chen and Brayden Thomas each threw shutout innings in relief in the eighth and ninth, respectively to close it out.

In the nightcap, Occidental had an early five-run inning to take control, scoring five in the second. CMS got back within 5-3 in the sixth, as Didrickson had an RBI double and came home on an RBI single from Shue. But Occidental scored five times in the eighth to put it away.

Bryant Smaaladen had 4.1 shutout innings of relief to help keep CMS in it, allowing three hits and striking out three.

The two teams will complete the three-game series tomorrow with a single game at Occidental, with CMS playing as the home team and batting second.
