Tanya Ghai banked in a running three-pointer from the right sideline with 0.1 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, and seniors

Caleigh Edwards and
Laura Strenk scored all eight points in overtime on their Senior Day, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team took a 62-57 overtime win over Whittier on Saturday at Roberts Pavilion.
CMS maintains its share of first place with Cal Lutheran after its dramatic comeback from down seven with 2:56 in regulation, as it improves to 17-5 overall and 11-2 in the SCIAC. Whititer slips to 10-11 overall and 5-8 in the SCIAC with the loss.
Edwards hit a pull-up jumper from the right elbow with 5.5 seconds left to cut the deficit to 53-51. Whittier split two foul shots to make a three-point lead, and out of timeouts, CMS went end to end as Ghai sprinted down the right sideline and put up a running off-balance three that banked in with just 0.1 seconds left.
Edwards then gave CMS the lead for good with a spinning bank shot in the paint at the 3:24 mark of overtime. Two foul shots from Resendiz stretched the lead to 58-54, and after the Poets got it to within 59-57 with 1:02 to go, Resendiz drove for a lay-up to make it a 61-57 contest.
CMS got off to a slow start and trailed 10-2 at the end of the first quarter, but stayed in it with its defense, getting the deficit down to 20-15 at the break. Resendiz and Edwards started the second half with two three-pointers to put the Athenas ahead 21-20, and the second half stayed tight until Whittier went ahead 49-42 with 2:56 to go.
Ghai hit the first of her two big three-pointers to get it to 49-45, and
Haylie Wang had a lay-up off a backdoor cut from Ghai to close it to 49-47 with 1:53 to go.
Cate Shingler also hit two clutch foul shots with 1:12 to go after Whittier went back up by four.
Resendiz had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Edwards played all 45 minutes and had 13 points and five steals. Ghai also played all 45 minutes and ended with 14 points, five assists, three steals and no turnovers. Strenk just missed double figures, finishing with nine points, four assists and two steals.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night when it hosts Occidental for a 7 p.m. contest at Roberts Pavilion.
