CMS Baseball Wins Two Games by Run Rule at Tucson Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. - Max Pemberton had nine RBI as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team scored a combined 37 runs in a 19-7 win over Aurora and an 18-8 win over the Mississippi University for Women on Saturday at the Tucson Invitational Games. 

With the wins, CMS now stands at 12-4 on the season, including 3-0 in Tucson, with all three wins by run rule after defeating Hamline 14-1 yesterday.

In the opening game, Pemberton was 3-for-4 with a homer and six RBI to lead the CMS offensive explosion. The Stags also walked 10 times, with Rider Gordon and Carter Bennett each finishing 2-for-2 with three walks. Bryce Didrickson was also 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Dillon Martin had four RBI and Alex Henderson finished with three. 

CMS scored five in the third to open up a 6-0 lead, with Martin's three-run double making it 4-0, followed by a Pemberton RBI double and Cruz Wexler sacrifice fly. 

Aurora got back within 7-5, but CMS scored three in the fifth and nine in the sixth to put it away. Henderson had a two-run triple to make it 9-5, before coming home on an error. Pemberton then had a two-run double and a two-run double as part of the nine-run sixth.

Dominic Rolla started and went three innings, allowing no earned runs on two hits, and Bryant Smaaladen closed out with three innings of work, striking out two. 

In the nightcap, CMS built a 14-1 lead before MUW got back to within 15-8, but the Stags enforced the run rule with three in the seventh to walk it off. 

Slader Spoor was 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBI, while Pemberton was 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI to finish the day 5-for-7 with two homers and nine runs batted in. Jett Shue was 3-for-5 with two RBI, Josh Jacobs was 3-for-5, and Didrickson was 2-for-4 with four runs scored.

Martin's RBI single started things in the first, with Bennett adding a sacrifice fly. Spoor hit a solo homer and Alex Henderson had an RBI double in the second. Pemberton then homered, Didrickson had a two-run single and Henderson added an RBI single in a five-run third to make the score 9-1. 

The Stags extended the lead to 14-1 in the fourth, with a Shue RBI single and two-run homers from Spoor and Henderson. Pemberton had an RBI double, Shue an RBI single and Spoor an RBI single to walk it off in the seventh. 

Colin McNiven got the win with one inning of relief, while Jacob Young threw a 1-2-3 seventh. 

CMS will be back in action tomorrow for a game against Carthage, before closing out the Tucson Invitational Games on Monday against Crown.
