CLAREMONT, Calif. - The top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's team had a tough battle from No. 22 Williams, which came in undefeated on the year, but the Stags were able to prevail with a 5-2 win on Tuesday evening at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
With the win, CMS stands at 17-1 on the season, after remaining at No. 1 in this week's poll despite suffering its first loss of the season on Saturday to Tufts (4-3), while Williams slides to 5-1 with its first loss.
Advik Mareedu cruised in both of his matches for the Stags, winning a 6-3, 6-0 decision at No. 1 singles and teaming with Caleb Settled for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Every other court was a battle, though, with the Stags able to win enough of them to get the clinch.
Josh Kim and
Sibi Raja took a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles to secure the doubles point, winning 7-4, while
Anirudh Reddy and
Henry Wilson also came from 5-2 down to get to a tiebreaker and earn a 7-3 win to complete the doubles sweep.
After Williams earned its first point at No. 4 singles,
Warren Pham gave CMS a 3-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, and
Amrith Kodumuri came through with a three-setter for the clinch, taking a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win at No. 6 to put CMS ahead 4-1.
Henry Wilson fought off a set point in a second-set tiebreaker down 6-5 to earn a 6-4, 7-6 win and give CMS its fifth point. William Luke earned a second point for Williams with a 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday for a pair of matches, taking on Middlebury at 11 a.m. and MIT at 6 p.m.
