Stags Tennis Takes Two Home Wins Over Middlebury, MIT

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The top-ranked  Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team took a 5-2 win over No. 15 Middlebury and a 6-1 win over No. 28 MIT as it swept both ends of a doubleheader at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. 

The wins improve CMS' record to 19-1 on the season, as it maintains its No. 1 ranking that it has held for over a month. Middlbury suffers its first defeat as it falls to 9-1, while MIT slips to 6-4. 

The Stags had to battle for the doubles point against Middlebury, but prevailed when Anirudh Reddy and Henry Wilson broke down 5-4 and came away with a 7-5 win to give CMS a 1-0 lead heading into singles. 

Advik Mareedu and Caleb Settles won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, and Mareedu put CMS ahead 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. Josh Kim dominated his second set for a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, and Wilson provided the clinch with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5. 

Sibi Raja added a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles to make the score 5-0, before Middlebury won pro-set tiebreakers in the third for wins at No. 6 singles (11-9) and No. 2 singles (10-6) to make the final score 5-2. 

CMS swept doubles against MIT, with Mareedu and Settles winning 6-3 at No. 1, and Reddy and Wilson clinching the doubles point for a second time on the day with a 6-4 win at No. 3. Raja and Kim added a 7-5 win at No. 2 for a sweep. 

Mareedu again was the first to finish at singles, winning a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 1, and Raja made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3. Wilson provided the clinch for the second time on the day with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4. Rohan Yarlagadda won a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 6, and Warren Pham made it 6-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2, before MIT salvaged the last point with a tiebreaker win at No. 4. 

CMS will be back in action when it returns to SCIAC play next weekend for home matches with California Lutheran and Chapman on Friday and Saturday.
