Athenas Lacrosse Dominates Redlands 25-3 in Battle for Second in SCIAC

REDLANDS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team came into the day tied for second with Redlands at 3-1 in league play, and untied it in dominant fashion, winning 25-3 on Saturday afternoon at Farquhar Field.

Ella Seidel and Amelia Ulmer each had five goals for the Athenas, who improve to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in league play with the win. Redlands, which had just a one-goal loss to first-place Pomona-Pitzer (9-8) in league play coming in, falls to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in SCIAC. 

Redlands actually scored the game's first goal, but the Athenas then rattled off nine in a row. Seidel scored 31 seconds after the Bulldogs found the net to make the score 1-1. Eleanor Shen put the Athenas ahead to stay with 3:20 left in the first, which was followed 24 seconds later by Seidel's second goal. 

CMS then staggered the Bulldogs with three goals in the final 47 seconds of the first quarter to surge ahead 6-1. Hannah Conte scored the first one, Cate Lewison followed with one with 19 seconds left, and Grace Minturn had a buzzer beater to make it a five-goal lead. 

Seidel completed her hat trick with a goal with 13:54 left in the half, and Ulmer scored three in the second quarter to put CMS ahead 10-2, before Rylie Hack pushed the lead up to 11-2. 

Redlands scored the last goal of the half, but CMS outscored the Bulldogs 12-0 in the second half. Seidel started the scoring, and Ella Brown scored two straight, before capping off a third-quarter hat trick with 20 seconds left. Maya Mihara, Ava Goldson, Ruby Maki and Kit Haggard all scored in the fourth, with Haggard adding a second with eight seconds left. 

Julia Ryan had 27 draw controls to help CMS dominate possession, while Lewison had six caused turnovers and Kate Risse added four. Minturn had four assists, and Ulmer added three, giving her eight points on the day. 

CMS will be back in action when it travels to Cal Lutheran on Saturday for an 11 a.m. contest.
