Ella Brown each scored two goals, but the Pomona-Pitzer women's lacrosse team was able to hold the Athenas without a goal over the final 22:51 to take a 10-8 win on Saturday at Zinda Field.
With the loss, CMS slips to 4-2 on the season, with both losses coming to nationally ranked opponents (Chicago and Pomona-Pitzer). The Sagehens stay unbeaten at 5-0 with the win.
Brown scored her second goal of the game with 7:51 left in the third off a pass from
Kate Larson to put CMS ahead 8-6. However, Piper Higgins scored two straight to tie it with 2:39 left in the third, and Catherine Faucette added another with 1:30 in the third to put the Sagehens ahead 9-8.
Only one goal was scored in the fourth, and it came off the stick of Caili Cross for Pomona-Pitzer with the Athenas down two players to green cards.
CMS was down 4-2 early in the second quarter, but Larson, Brown, Mihara and Matsik all scored in a span of 4:22 to put CMS ahead 6-5 with 7:17 left in the half. Matsik added another goal to start the second half to give CMS a 7-5 lead, but the Sagehens were able to rally.
Lyla Johnston had 12 saves for CMS in defeat, while
Cate Lewison and
Ava Marra each had three ground balls and
Julia Ryan had eight draw controls.
The Athenas return to action next Sunday to face Colorado College at 1 p.m.
