CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team had even battles with No. 7 Redlands until the late innings in two of the three games of the weekend series, but ended up coming up short as the Bulldogs were able to come away with the hard-fought sweep.
Redlands won the first game on Friday 6-3 on a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, and then broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run triple in the sixth for a 3-1 win in the opener on Saturday, before taking the final game 9-1 at Athena Field.
Redlands improves to 29-4 overall and 14-1 in SCIAC play with the three wins, while CMS falls to 13-14-1 and 4-8 in league play.
Alex Wedemeyer tied the score 3-3 with a two-run homer in the sixth inning of Friday's road contest, but Natalie Lowthers hit a three-run shot with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to end it. Wedemeyer finished 2-for-4 and
Mrdah Murali was 2-for-3.
In the opener on Saturday,
Hina Usuda hit a triple in the second and came home on a sacrifice fly from
Lexie Stinson. Redlands was able to tie it in the fourth, and then went ahead on a Jenay Scott opposite field triple in the third and Brianna Garcia was able to finish off the relief win.
CMS showed some defensive prowess in defeat, with
Giselle Lai catching a ball in deep center field and throwing out Lowthers trying to advance to third. Usuda had an unassisted double play on a line drive to left, and
Gaby Robel ended the sixth with a diving play at shortstop.
Robel led off the sixth with a double, but Redlands was able to make a similar defensive play with a throw from Scott from center field to get pinch runner
Megan Kho at the plate after a Wedemeyer single.
Lai was 2-for-3 for the Athenas in the nightcao, while
Ella Yerkes had a quality start, holding Redlands to just one run through five.
Caroline Cappetto threw 1.1 innings of no-hit relief to give the Athenas a chance in the seventh.
Lai was 2-for-3 in the nightcap, and broke up a shutout bid from Katlyn Gandara with a two-out RBI single in the fifth to score
Ana Federico, who reached on a pinch-hit RBI double.
CMS will be back in action next weekend for a three-game series with Whittier, beginning with a home game on Friday at 3 p.m.
