CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Christine Yu tied a Claremont-Mudd-Scripps program record with a -5 (67) on the first day of the SCIAC Women's Golf Championship, helping the Athenas to a seven-shot lead with two rounds still to play.
Yu's 67 is the fifth -5 score in program history, with teammate
Esther Lee also accomplishing it twice, including at the SCIAC Championships in 2023, along with alumni Reina Tain and
Stella Cheng. Lee has also had a 66 on a par-70 course (-4).
CMS shot a 289 as a team (+1) to take a seven-shot lead over Pomona-Pitzer, which finished with a 296, with Redlands close behind in third with a 297 and Cal Lutheran in fourth at 302.
Yu holds a three-shot lead on the individual leaderboard with her -5, while Annabelle Chan of Pomona-Pitzer is second at -2, while Lee is in third at -1.
Yu actually started off with a bogey on her first hole, but quickly responded with a eagle on the par-five second to get in the red for good. She added birdies on No. 5, No. 7 and No. 9 to take the turn at -4, and her birdie at No. 17 gave her a share of the CMS record.
Lee had a birdie on No. 18 to get into the red after a steady round that saw 15 pars and two birdies.
Ella Chiu also had a big finish for CMS, with birdies on No. 16, No. 17 and No. 18 to move up to 10th on the individual leaderboard. First-years
Alisa Ching and
Precilla Tea are tied for 13th at +4.
The second round will get underway tomorrow at 10 a.m., with the Athenas teeing off in the later groups, starting at 10:45. The final round will take place Saturday, with the winner receiving the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships, which CMS will host this year at Desert Willow Golf Course in Palm Desert next month.
