Ferris Has Walk-Off RBI Single in Opener; Athenas Sweep Occidental on Senior Day

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team celebrated its three seniors - Hannah Adams, Rachel Sapirstein and Megan Kho - before the game, and the Athenas went on to earn a 5-4, 8-3 doubleheader sweep over Occidental on Saturday at Athena Field. 

With the wins, CMS improved to 17-16-1, 8-10 in the SCIAC, getting back into the SCIAC playoff chase with one weekend left, while Occidental dropped to 4-29, 1-18 on the season with the loss. 

In the opener, Alex Wedemeyer tied the game with on a two run-double in the seventh inning and Imani Ferris walked it off with a RBI single to right. Wedemeyer was 2-for-4 with four RBI, including a two RBI single to center in the first, which tied the game at 2-2. 

The Tigers took a 4-2 lead in the seventh after Ana Kim and Kadence Bernard added RBI singles. Sapirstein gave the Athenas momentum with a single to start the bottom of the inning, followed by a Giselle Lai single to center. Gaby Robel added a bunt, advancing Lai and Sapirstein, leading to Wedemeyer's RBI double and Ferris's walk off single. 

In the nightcap, Gaby Robel was 4-for-4 with one RBI, while Wedemeyer, Kho and Danica Stirling each had two RBI. CMS took a 5-0 lead in the first inning after Robel had a RBI single to left, followed by Saperstein scoring on a wild pitch. Stirling also walked in a run, allowing Lai to find home plate. Kho then tallied a two RBI single to left, leading to Wedemeyer and Robel scoring. 

Perri Derian pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, recording three strikeouts on eight hits for the Athenas. Wedemeyer had a RBI sac fly in the second and a RBI double in the fourth while Stirling also added a sac fly to give CMS an 8-0 lead. The Tigers recorded two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth but the Athenas were able to capture the 8-3 win.

CMS will be back in action on May 1 when hosts La Verne for a single game at 3 p.m. during its final regular season series of the season.
