Athenas Lacrosse Advances to SCIAC Finals with 18-12 Win over Redlands

CLAREMONT, Calif. - SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year Amelia Ulmer scored six goals, and Julia Ryan had 20 draw controls, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team earned an 18-12 win over Redlands in the semifinals of the SCIAC Tournament on Wednesday evening at Zinda Field. 

With the win, CMS improves to 12-4 on the year and moves on to the SCIAC Championship, where it'll face top-seeded Pomona-Pitzer on the road on Saturday at 7 p.m. Redlands slips to 9-7, and will await a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. 

CMS trailed 3-2 late in the first quarter, before going on a 7-0 run to take control. Eleanor Shen tied the score in the final minute of the first, and CMS then scored six straight in the second, before the Bulldogs broke the run with a goal at the buzzer. 

Maya Mihara gave CMS the lead for good 24 seconds into the second quarter off a field from Ulmer. Ulmer and Ella Seidel then scored goals 17 seconds apart at the 9:38 and 9:21 marks to make it a 6-3 lead. 

After Ulmer finished off her hat trick to make it 7-3, and Grace Minturn scored two goals in a row to push the lead to 9-3. After Redlands scored the first goal of the second half to close to within 9-5, Ella Brown scored two in a row and Kaia Scott added one to make the score 12-5. 

Redlands pulled back within 12-7, but Brown and Scott scored two in a row again, and Ulmer scored three times in the fourth to help CMS put it away. 

CMS held a 29-2 edge in draw controls behind the 20 from Ryan. Cate Lewison added five, to go with a team-high four assists. Kate Risse and Shen each caused three turnovers, while Stella Hansot led with four ground balls. Lyla Johnston had seven saves in goal to get the win. 

CMS and Pomona-Pitzer will meet in the conference championship game for the seventh straight season, since CMS defeated Chapman in 2017.
