Adams Throws No-Hitter as CMS Softball Defeats Cal Lutheran 9-0 in Five

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Hannah Adams threw a five-inning no-hitter, allowing only a first inning walk, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team defeated Cal Lutheran 9-0 in five innings on Friday at Athena Field.

With the win, CMS moves to 13-9-1 overall on the season and 4-3 in the SCIAC, while Cal Lutheran sees its record slip to 2-8 in league play.

Gaby Robel gave Adams all the offense she would need with a pair of two-run singles in the first inning and the second to help CMS out to a 9-0 lead. The Athenas scored two runs in the first, and then broke it open with a seven-run second.

Adams did not need a strikeout as she got 15 routine outs behind her. Five of them were pop-ups in foul territory, including the last two to Alex Wedemeyer at first. Lexie Stinson made a routine grab of a liner in left, and Danica Stirling handled a sharp grounder in the fourth, but that was as close as the Regals could come to a hit.

Delanie Stevens opened the game with a single to left-center, and after a Giselle Lai sacrifice, Rachel Sapirstein walked, and a Wedemeyer single loaded the bases. Robel then plated two with a liner to right to give CMS a first-inning lead.

In the second, Stirling led off with a single and stole second, and Stevens followed with another single and stole second. After a Lai walk loaded the bases, Wedemeyer singled to make the score 3-0 and Robel followed with her second two-run single.

Hina Usuda then singled to make the score 6-0, and Usuda and Robel worked a double-steal to plate the seventh run. A Stirling bases-loaded walk made it 8-0, and Stevens added another for the 9-0 final score.

Adams needed 61 pitches, getting 11 outs in the air and four on the ground, and faced one batter over the minimum with 16 batters faced in five innings. Stevens was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Robel finished 2-for-3 with four RBI.

The two teams will complete the three-game series with a doubleheader at Cal Lutheran tomorrow, beginning at 12 p.m.
