Athenas Softball Closes Out with Sweep of La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team earned 5-0 and 8-2 wins at La Verne to close out its 2026 season on a high note with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.

With the wins, CMS finishes the year at 19-17-1 overall and 10-11 in the SCIAC. The Athenas had a chance to qualify for the SCIAC Tournament if Whittier and Pomona-Pitzer both lost their games today, but Whittier earned a bid with a sweep of Chapman.

Perri Derian threw a two-hit shutout in the opener, and got the win in the nightcap with four innings of relief, allowing just one run.

Imani Ferris was 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Giselle Lai added an RBI single in the opener. In the second game, Annabella Ramirez hit a three-run shot to put the Athenas ahead 4-2 in the fifth, part of a 7-run inning after the Leopards had taken a 2-0 lead.

Riley Cooper got the Athenas on the board with an RBI single to score Gaby Robel, and Ramirez plated both Kho and Danica Stirling with her round-tripper. Giselle Lai added a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2, and Robel had a two-run single in her second plate appearance of the inning. Lai capped off the scoring with an RBI single in the seventh to make the final score 8-2.

Robel finished 3-for-4 with two RBI in the nightcap, while Ramirez was 1-for-2 with her three-run homer.

CMS will look to get back to the postseason next season, after losing just three seniors to graduation, although the contributions of Kho, No. 1 starter Hannah Adams, and four-year starting third-baseman Rachel Sapirstein will be hard to replace.
