CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior back
Carmel Randolph scored on a 30-yard blast into the upper-right corner for her first collegiate goal to put the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team ahead 1-0, but Cal Lutheran was able to equalize midway through the second half as the two teams came away with a 1-1 draw on Saturday evening at Nakasone Field.
With the tie, CMS moves to 4-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the SCIAC, while Cal Lutheran sees its record move to 3-1-3 overall and 0-0-2 in league play.
The Athenas went ahead 1-0 when Randolph let fire in the 28th minute from long range, just after getting a hit-ahead pass from
Robyn Dizon. The shot tracked the upper-right corner and tucked in just under the crossbar, giving Randolph her first career tally.
The blast also came one game after fellow senior outside back
Ava Allen scored her first collegiate goal from similar distance for the game-winner in a 2-0 win over Whittier on Wednesday.
Cal Lutheran was able to find the equalizer off a corner kick as Tessa French was able to score in front of the goalmouth. The Athenas had a bid to tie, but
Frankie Fragola hit the crossbar, one of three shots that hit the woodwork for CMS on the afternoon.
Cal Lutheran held a close 17-14 edge in shots, while
Andra Marinescu had eight saves for the Athenas to get the tie, including one where she laid out in the first half and made a stop at full extension.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Pomona-Pitzer for a 4 p.m. contest.
