CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Elsie Lindeman scored twice two minutes apart in the second half to help give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team a 5-0 win over Redlands in a non-SCIAC game played on Sunday afternoon at Nakasone Field.
Sierra Troy had the game-winner in the first half,
Flora Glantz added a first-half goal, and
Emily Bersin scored in her first game since her sophomore season after returning from an injury. CMS improves to 2-0 on the young season with the win, while Redlands falls to 0-2 with the loss.
CMS opened the scoring in the first half off a corner kick taken by
Annika Marshall. Lexi Roth was the first one to it about 15 yards from goal and played it forward, and Troy was able to one-time it into the net from six yards out to make the score 1-0 at almost exactly the midway mark of the first half (22:27).
Glantz doubled the lead late in the first half off another corner kick, as Redlands tried to clear the ball out danger. Glantz, though, was able to intercept the clearance at the top of the 18-yard box and sent a shot inside the left post to make it a 2-0 game with 9:31 left in the half.
Lindeman then put the game away with a pair of goals 2:07 apart in the 51st and 53rd minute. The first one came when
Jesselyn Lee was able to toe-poke the ball away from a Redlands defender inside the 18-yard box, and it rolled to Lindeman who was able to bury the finish. The second one came when
Sena Howell was able to get the ball after a change of possession and send Lindeman towards net with a head of steam, and she was able to let loose a strike from the top of the 18 to make it a 4-0 game.
Bersin finished off the scoring when she got a header on a cross from
Cathryn McCormick at the top of the six yard box with 10:23 left and sent it inside the far post. CMS finished off the shutout, as starter Shannon Bennit had one save in the first half, and
Claire Patterson picked up one save in the second half, as the Athenas finished with a 37-5 edge in shots.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it hosts Lewis & Clark for an 11 a.m. contest.
