Tim Sternfeld enters his third season as an assistant coach with the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team in 2026.
Sternfeld took over play calling duties midway through the 2024 season. In his first game calling plays for CMS, the Stags put up 57 points, which was their most since 2012. Over those final five games the Stags gained 400+ yards three times and averaged 360 yards per game. The Stags finished the 2024 season first in the SCIAC in rushing yards and fourth down conversions. They were second in total offensive yards, points, and had four all-conference selections.
In 2025 CMS finished first in the SCIAC in offensive efficiency. third in scoring offense, rushing offense, passing offense, and red zone percentage. Rob Litscher ranked first in the conference in passing efficiency, second in passing touchdowns, and third in passing yards. Cooper Nixon ranked first in SCIAC in yards per game, and third overall in rushing. The Stags had their first 300+ yard passing game in 10 years against George Fox, and featured the longest play in CMS history with a 96-yard reception by Jaden Rattay in the final moments. The CMS offense featured a top two passer, top three rusher, five wide receivers in the top 15, and three all-conference selections.
Prior to joining CMS, Sternfeld served as the offensive coordinator at William Paterson University in New Jersey. In his three seasons at William Paterson, they had more wins than the previous seven seasons combined.
In 2023, the William Paterson quarterback ranked second in the conference in most passing statistics (completions, yards, touchdowns) and its top wide receiver was first in receiving touchdowns, second in yards and third in receptions. Sternfeld coached four all-league players, including two first-team wide receivers, as well as two offensive linemen. The William Paterson offense featured a top-two passer, top-three rusher, and two wide receivers in the top five.
In 2022, Sternfeld helped the program to its best record in 10 years, while coaching the Offensive Rookie of the Year, as well as a first-team all-league running back, and four all-conference selections.
In 2021 the William Paterson offense was first in the conference in passing touchdowns, second in passing yards and third in scoring offense. The William Paterson quarterback ranked first in passing touchdowns, second in completions, passing yards, and third in passing efficiency. They also featured two wide receivers in the top five of every major receiving category including receiving yards, touchdowns, receptions, and yards per catch. The William Paterson offense featured a top-two passer, top-two rusher, and two wide receivers in the top five, as well as six all-conference selections.
Sternfeld previously served as an assistant coach for two different stints at Stevenson University, his alma mater, with a one-year stint as the recruiting coordinator and offensive line coach at Johns Hopkins in between. He also works as a quarterbacks coach at the Manning Passing Academy at Nichols State every summer.
He graduated from Stevenson University in Maryland. Tim and his wife Maria live in Claremont with their daughter Isabella.
