CMS Volleyball captured its second win of the week with a
victory over cross-campus rival, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges Friday
night at Ducey Gym. Game 1 was close from the opening points,
neither team pulling ahead by more than 3 points throughout the
contest. When a missed serve by Pomona-Pitzer at 29-29
put CMS ahead by one, senior outside hitter Lindsay Hull (CMC, Phoenix AZ) scored the final
point with her 10th kill of the game, winning 31-29. Game 2
belonged to CMS, as the team hit .323 backed by the play of middle
blocker Camille Butts (Sr. SCR, Ontario CA) who
notched 6 kills fueling the Athenas to a 30-18 victory.
Pomona-Pitzer returned with renewed energy in game 3 felling CMS
26-30 and though CMS was ahead 28-27 in game 4, 3 Athenas' hitting
errors cost them the set 28-30 forcing the fifth and deciding game.
CMS took an early 3-0 lead before trading points with the
Sagehens but was up 8-6 at the switch. They held Pomona-Pitzer
to a .045 hitting percentage and picked up 10 of their eventual 15
points on kills, including 3 from freshman outside hitter Kendra Huff (CMC, Downey CA). The Athenas won
15-11. Alex Harrison had 60 assists in the effort,
also chipping in 8 digs, while Hull led both teams offensively with
22 kills and also had 16 digs. The victory places CMS in third
place in the conference. They will square off with Cal Lutheran
University Saturday night at Ducey Gym. Match time is
6:00.
