In her first collegiate start, freshman setter Hilary Bruegl led
her team to a victory over Caltech Tuesday night. Raised in
Pasadena, the location couldn't have been more fitting for Bruegl
who notched 28 assists and a pair of digs in the three set win.
In set one, the Athenas got off to a rousing start, and
led by as many as 20 points before closing the match out 25-7.
Caltech rallied in set two and held CMS to a .233 hitting
average, but the Athenas strong serving down the stretch and a
pair of kills by junior outside hitter, Emily Hudson (So. Pasadena,
CA) helped CMS go on an 11-3 point run and the team finished
ahead 25-21. Set three was all CMS as they minimized errors
and capitalized on Caltech mistakes to close out the match with a
25-14 win.
Emily Hudson led both teams with 14 kills and hit .414 on the
night. She had help from fellow outside hitter, Kelly Halamek (So.,
Palo Alto, CA) who finished with 8 kills and 8 digs. Middle
blocker, Leanne Ringquist (Sr., Ben Lomond, CA) was also excellent,
notching 5 kills and no errors for a .500 average.
The Athenas will continue conference play this weekend as they
take on the Whittier Poets at home on Friday evening, then travel
to Eagle Rock on Saturday to play Occidental College. Match times
are 7:30 and 6:00, respectively.
