The CMS Volleyball team continued conference play Friday night
with a three set win over Whittier College (25-22, 25-22, 26-24).
The Poets entered the evening with just a single win, but put the
CMS defense to the test. The Athenas went ahead early in set one
before giving up a 5 point run led by Whittier's Alayna Rigo.
Senior captain, Allie Macy picked up 4 of her eventual 6 kills and
fueled the CMS comeback. Emily Hudson (Jr., OH, South Pasadena, CA)
connected with setter, Taylor Jones (So. Scottsdale, AZ) and put
away two kills in the final points to capture the first set 25-22.
Set two went much the same way, but it was Whittier who pulled away
early, holding the Athenas to a mere .130 hitting average. Leading
by just a single point late in the game, a dominating block by
senior opposite, Angela Estrella-Lemus (Gilroy, CA) turned the tide
in favor of CMS. Outside hitter, Kendra Huff (Sr., Downey, CA) came
into the game and hit a kill before serving the winning point to
give the team another 25-22 win. Despite five serving errors in the
third set, CMS was strong offensively, notching 15 kills in the
effort, narrowly holding off the Poets, 26-24 to finish the
match.
The Athenas were led offensively by Hudson who tallied 15 kills
en route to a .308 hitting average on the night. She also pitched
in 19 digs. T. Jones had another strong outing, and recorded 29
assists, 6 digs and a block. Libero, Shalynn Ho had 17 digs.
CMS Volleyball continues SCIAC competition tomorrow night in
Eagle Rock, CA as the Athenas take on the Tigers of Occidental
College. The Tigers enter the contest undefeated in conference
play, with recent wins over defending SCIAC champion, University of
Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. Match time is 6:00 pm.
