The CMS volleyball team captured its third SCIAC win in straight
sets over the defending SCIAC champion, University of Redlands
Tuesday night at Ducey Gym (25-15, 25-23, 26-24). Set one was a
tight battle with the teams trading points until CMS went on a four
point run to pull ahead 16-12. Despite a Redlands timeout, the
Bulldogs returned the next serve as an overpass to extend the CMS
lead to five. CMS allowed just two more points in the set before a
kill by setter, Taylor Jones (So., Scottsdale, AZ) gave the Athenas
game point. A slide kill from freshman middle blocker, Bennett
Jones (Monte Sereno, CA) closed the set 25-15.
In set two, the Athenas jumped out to an early 6-1 lead but a
Redlands' timeout resulted in a missed serve by CMS. Back to
back kills by outside hitter, Jackie Hamilton pulled the Bulldogs
within two points. Although the Redlands squad continued to
battle, CMS never relinquished the lead and captured the second win
25-23.
Set three looked to be dominated by CMS who led by as many as 6
points early in the game before Redlands pieced together a group of
kills and challenged the CMS serve receive. Tied at 24-24, a kill
by senior Allie Macy (OH, Walnut, CA) followed by an attack by
Leanne Ringquist (Sr., MB, Ben Lomond, CA) gave the final points
and the match victory to CMS.
The Athenas were paced offensively by outside hitters, Allie
Macy and Emily Hudson (Jr., South Pasadena, CA) who finished the
evening with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Hudson also notched 19
digs, a close second to libero, Shalynn Ho, who tallied 21 digs.
Taylor Jones controlled the offense and dished out 34 assists in
the effort.
With the win, the Athenas advance to 3-1 in SCIAC play. They
will travel to Thousand Oaks Friday to take on the first place Cal
Lutheran Regals. Match time is 7:30 pm.
