Great Moments from 75 Years of Athletics
1963-64 Men's Basketball: Colin Finishes with Exactly 1000 Points
The CMS Men's Basketball program's exclusive 1,000-point club has swelled to 20 over the years, but the first to break the ice was also the program's first All-American. Paul Colin played for three seasons for Claremont-Mudd from 1961-64 and hit the thousand-point mark in dramatic fashion, reaching that figure on the dot in his final game with the Stags. In the final week, he poured in 27 points in a win over Pomona in his final Sixth Street Game, which was key to reaching the milestone.
Colin averaged 14.5 points and 8.8 rebounds over his career, and was an All-SCIAC selection all three seasons. He was a second-team selection as a sophomore and junior, and first team as senior, when he went on to earn third-team All-America distinction from the NAIA, making him the first Claremont-Mudd athlete to be voted on to an All-America team.
While the 1,000-point club would continue to gradually grow, the Claremont-Mudd Men's Basketball All-America club was a club of one for 24 years, until Todd Thomas became the second Stag All-American in 1988. That list is now just seven, with Chris Greene (1992), Kevin Zitar (1996), Chris Blees (2012), Tyler Gaffaney (2015) and Michael Scarlett (2017, 2018) joining Colin and Thomas.
The Stags finished the 1963-64 season with an 11-12 record, including 5-5 in the SCIAC, highlighted by the two-game sweep of Pomona. Colin would go on to be inducted into the CMS Hall of Fame in 1999.
