2016-17 Women's Basketball: Athenas Win Fourth Straight Title in Roberts Debut

The seniors on the 2016-17 CMS Women's Basketball team perhaps made some NCAA history by winning four straight conference titles … using playoff wins at three different home courts.

The Athenas won the 2014 title with Ducey Gymnasium as its home, where it captured a semifinal win in overtime against Redlands in its final game in the building (before winning the title at Chapman). In both 2015 and 2016, CMS hosted the SCIAC Championship game at its temporary home at Harvey Mudd's Linde Activities Center, while Roberts Pavilion was under construction, and rolled past Cal Lutheran both times.

In 2016-17, Roberts Pavilion was open for business, and the Athenas made sure that they could show off the new facility in the SCIAC Tournament by earning the top seed. In the semifinals, they jumped out to a 17-4 lead over Redlands after the first quarter and led the rest of the way to advance through to their fourth straight championship game.

In the final against Chapman, the Athenas were tied 40-40 in the fourth quarter, before a three-point play from senior Claire Donnelly gave CMS the lead for good. Back-to-back baskets from senior Kris Brackmann stretched the lead to seven, and the Athenas would go on to the 65-54 win and their fourth straight title.

CMS added a 79-63 win over Texas-Dallas in the NCAA Tournament, its 20th of the year, before eventually falling to Trinity in the regional finals.  Brackmann, Donnelly, Jai Dungca, Quinn Glosniak, Alyson Young and Shaina Van Stryk were the six seniors who were part of a class that won four titles in a row, with Brackmann earning First-Team All-SCIAC honors in 2016-17.
