Luke (Bear) Weigle scored four goals and
Jeffrey Koretz and
Len Korol each added three as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team took a 17-5 win over La Verne on Saturday at Las Flores Park.
With the win, CMS moves to 10-7 on the year and 3-1 in the SCIAC as it tries to defend its league and national titles this year.
The game was tight at the half, with the Stags only up 6-3, but they were able to score seven times in the third quarter (to just one for the Leopards) to break it open.
Weigle ended the first half with a goal to make it 6-3, and then followed up a
Gavin Netherton goal with another with 6:13 left in the third to push the lead to 8-3. Koretz finished off a 4-0 run with a goal to make it 9-3, before the Leopards got one back from Peter Trinh nine seconds later.
However, the Stags rattled off the next eight goals in a row, with Koretz and Korol each scoring two during the spurt and Weigle adding his fourth.
Luke Leonard,
Thomas Walker and
Ivey Gehring also had goals during the 8-0 run.
Walker and Netherton finished with two goals, and
Luke Leonard had a goal and a team-high three assists.
Jake Taylor had 10 saves and three steals in three quarters of work.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Caltech for a 7 p.m. contest.
