Stags Water Polo Rolls to 22-5 Win at Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. - Luke Leonard had three goals and three assists for a team-high six points as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team picked up its sixth win in a row with a dominant 22-5 win over Caltech on Wednesday evening.

With the win, CMS moves to 11-7 on the season and 4-1 in the SCIAC with its third straight conference win since a one-goal defeat to Occidental (15-14). Luke (Bear) Weigle, the reigning SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week, added a hat trick for the Stags as well, as 14 different players scored goals.

CMS took control with a 5-0 run that pushed a 2-1 lead up to 7-1. After Weigle and Netherton scored to make it 2-0, Caltech cut the deficit in half with 4:39 left in the first quarter, but Hassen Hove answered 24 seconds later. Ivey Gehring and Auggie Aliaga capped off the first quarter with goals to make it 5-1, and Nick Kennedy and Cristian Pang started the second quarter with goals to make it a 7-1 game.

The Beavers got their second goal to stop the run, but Weigle and Kennedy netted their second goals, and Leonard capped off the half with his first to make it 10-3 at the break.

Aliaga, Asher Engelberg, and Kennedy each had two goals for CMS. Ashwin Rhodes, Jeffrey Koretz, Jordan Lind, and Stryker Scales also tallied scores. Jake Taylor had one save in the first half to get the win, and Chase Campbell made four saves in the second half.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Cal Lutheran for an 11 a.m. contest.
