McGovern's Triple-Double Leads CMS Volleyball Over Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. - Georgia McGovern had her first career triple-double with 47 assists, 11 kills and 14 digs to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scipps volleyball team to a four-set win over Redlands on Saturday at Currier Gymnasium.

Set scores were 25-21, 25-20, 24-26, 25-11 as CMS responded in a big way after a close third-set defeat with a dominant fourth. With the win, the Athenas move to 13-4 on the season and 7-1 in the SCIAC, bouncing back from a defeat to La Verne on Friday night. Redlands moves to 8-6 overall and 4-3 in the SCIAC.

McGovern fell one kill short of a triple-double three times a year ago, including 31-11-9 against Occidental, 52-11-9 against WashU and 40-18-9 against Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Her 11 kills against Redlands marked a season high, passing the eight she had against Chapman.

Dede Carranza had a big day defensively with 31 digs, while Brenna Bell had 17 kills and Brooke McKee added 14 to pace the offense.

CMS led 15-8 in the first set but had to hold off a Redlands surge, as the Bulldogs got back within 21-19. McKee stemmed the tide with a kill and Bell had two in a row to make it a 24-19 score before the Athenas took it 25-21 on a service error.

Redlands then held a 17-16 lead in the second set, before a 7-0 Athena run gave them control of the set and the match. McKee had a kill and an ace around a Kelsey Polhemus kill to start the run, and then after a timeout, Shae Delany had a kill, McKee had another ace, and McGovern and Polhemus capped it off the run with kills. Delany then finished off a 25-20 win with a kill.

CMS led 24-22 in the third set with two match points, but the Bulldogs battled back with four straight points to force it to a fourth. The Athenas led 9-7, but the won 12 of the next 13 points with a 5-0 run and a 7-0 run to pull away for the win. McKee and McGovern each had two kills in the 5-0 run to put CMS ahead 14-7, and Delany had a kill and a block in the 7-0 run. Delany then capped the match off with an ace for a 25-11 win.

The Athenas will have 10 days off before starting the second half of SCIAC play, beginning with a road match at Caltech on Oct. 22 and a home match with Whittier on Oct. 25.
