CMS Men's Water Polo Falls at the Buzzer to Occidental

EAGLE ROCK, Calif. - Occidental goalie Jack Schroeder came off his line to the offensive end for the final possession and converted the game-winning goal as the clock expired to give the Tigers men's water polo team a 15-14 upset win over top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday evening. 

With the loss, CMS falls to 6-6 on the year and 1-1 in the SCIAC after suffering its first Division I loss. Auggie Aliaga had three goals and two assists and Jack Bryant added three goals for the Stags. 

Bryant and Jeffrey Koretz scored on back-to-back possessions to tie the score 14-14 with 2:51 to go. Each team had two possessions to take the lead and could not convert, but the Tigers got the last chance with 13 seconds left and called a timeout to set up a final play. Schroeder came up to the offensive end to create a 7-on-6 chance, and then fired home wht winning goal with no time left to give the Tigers the 15-14 win. 

The game was close throughout with neither team ever leading by more than two Occidental scored three straight goals in the first quarter to take a 3-1 lead, bit Aliaga, Hassen Hove and Luke (Bear) Weigle scored three goals in a row to give CMS a 4-3 lead heading into the second quarter. 

The score was tied 7-7 at the half, and Occidental scored the first two goals of the second half, but Aliaga tied ot 10-10 with 1:30 left in the third. Cristian Pang opened the fourth quarter with a goal to tie it at 11-11, but Occidental's Travis Hughes scored two in a row to give the Tigers a 13-11 lead. CMS tied it back up at 14-14, before Occidental made the final goal count. 

Hove and Weigle each had two goals for CMS, while Walker and Nick Kennedy had two assists apiece. 

CMS will be back in action when it co-hosts the Gary Troyer Invitational on Friday and Saturday, beginning with games against Pepperdine (3 p.m.) and Air Force (7 p.m.) on Friday.
