CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team trailed Air Force 10-7 going into the fourth quarter but exploded for eight goals to come back for a 15-13 win and a split of the day's action at the Gary Troyer Tournament on Friday at Axelrood Pool.
The Stags, who got four goals and two assists from
Nick Kennedy and four goals from
Cristian Pang, move to 6-7 on the year after falling to No. 4 Pepperdine 19-5 in the first game of the day. Air Force slips to 9-10 with the loss.
CMS scored on its first six possessions of the fourth quarter, and eight of its first nine, to flip the script after Air Force used a 5-1 third quarter to take a 10-7 lead heading into the final stanza. Kennedy opened with a goal, which was answered by a Falcon penalty shot, but
Luke (Bear) Weigle converted off an entry pass from
Jack Bryant with 6:52 left to get CMS back within 11-9.
Pang then scored on two possessions in a row from almost the same spot, the first coming on a lob shot cross cage, and the second coming on a bullet inside the near post to tie the score 11-11 with 5:13 left. Air Force called a timeout, but CMS kept the momentum going with
Jeffrey Koretz scoring on two straight possessions, the first coming on an entry pass from
Gavin Netherton and the second coming on a Kennedy feed to put CMS ahead 13-11 with 3:30 left.
Air Force got its first stop of the fourth quarter, but couldn't convert, and Kennedy scored his fourth with 1:47 to go to make it a three-goal lead. The Falcons got one back with 1:29 to go, but
Thomas Walker came right back 15 seconds later to make it 15-12 and seal the win for the Stags.
Bryant finished with five assists for CMS and goalie
Jake Taylor had seven steals to pace the defensive effort. CMS dropped the opening game to Pepperdine 19-5, with
Auggie Aliaga scoring twice, and Pang, Weigle and
Ivey Gehring each adding goals for the Stags.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it faces Wagner at 1:20 p.m. and Biola at 5:20 p.m.
