CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Samuel Brewer of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team earned the SCIAC Special Teams Player of the Week award for games through Saturday, Oct. 26, the conference office announced today.
Brewer helped the Stags to a big 17-10 road win over Redlands on Saturday, in a defensive battle where field position was paramount. He averaged 39.8 yards on his eight punts, putting three inside the 20 yard line, and adding a 54-yard touchback.
One of his biggest punts came in the fourth quarter after the Bulldogs had pulled within 17-10 on their previous drive, and earned a stop in CMS territory. With momentum against the Stags, Brewer then let loose a 49-yard punt that had no return, pinning Redlands back on its own 19-yard line and CMS was able to win the field position battle and the game in the closing minutes.
CMS will be back in action this weekend for a huge game against Chapman, which will likely determine the Surf Division title and a berth in the SCIAC Championship game on Nov. 16.
