CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Cristian Pang scored three goals, and had added three assists and three steals, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team controlled the game throughout and took a 15-10 home win over Whittier on Wednesday night at Axelrood Pool.
With the win, CMS moves to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the SCIAC, while handing Whittier its first non-Division I loss, as the Poets slip to 8-3 on the season and 2-1 in league play.
Luke (Bear) Weigle had three goals for CMS, while
Jake Taylor had 12 saves and four steals in net to get the win.
CMS led 5-2 after the first quarter and 10-4 at the half as it built out its lead over the opening 16 minites. Weigle had the game's first goal, and after Whittier tied it, CMS scored the next three goals to take the lead for good.
Jack Bryant put CMS up 2-1, Pang scored his first to stretch the lead to 3-1, and
Thomas Walker closed out the run with a goal to make it 4-1 with 2:19 left in the first.
Nick Kennedy capped off the first quarter with a goal to make it 5-2, and
Donovan Davidson and Pang started the second quarter with goals to extend the lead to 7-2.
Luke Leonard tallied twice, and Weigle finished off the half with a goal with five seconds left to make it 10-4 at the break.
Whittier scored five times in the fourth quarter to close the final gap, but
Len Korol capped off the scoring for CMS with 2:01 to go.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to La Verne for an 11 a.m. contest.
