Edwards, Brutto Earn SCIAC Weekly Honors for CMS Football

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Justin Edwards of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team earned the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week Award, and Rich Brutto Captured the Special Teams Player of the Week the SCIAC office announced this afternoon.

Edwards and Brutto earned their honors after celebrating their Senior Day prior to Saturday's game with Cal Lutheran and then leading the Stags to a 41-24 win after trailing 17-7 at the half.

Edwards re-wrote the CMS record books by running for 324 yards and three touchdowns, breaking the single-game record by 50 yards, which was set in 2019 by Garrett Cheadle (274) against Whittier in his Senior Day. His 324 yards also pushed him over 4000 for his career, and past the CMS career record of 4044, set by Ryan Gocong (2001-04) to 4106. He had 219 of his yards in the second half alone, leading CMS back from a 10-point deficit.

Brutto was also key in the comeback with a pair of third quarter field goals, a 45-yarder which tied the score 17-17, and then a 28-yarder to put the Stags ahead 27-17. He was also perfect on all five of his extra point attempts, earning the Special Teams Player of the Week honor for the second time this season and fourth time in his career.

CMS will close out the regular season at home against Redlands on Saturday at 1 p.m.
