CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Justin Edwards capped off his record-breaking career with 208 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and seniors
Benjamin Littlefield (three sacks) and
Joey Asta (10 tackles) helped lead a shutout effort as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team matched a program record with its eighth win of the season by beating Redlands 24-0 on Saturday afternoon in the third-place game of SCIAC Championship Weekend.
With the win, CMS closes its season at 8-2 for the second year in a row, matching the record of eight wins first set in 1970, and then matched in 1986, and again last year. The senior class finished with a program record 30 wins in four seasons, winning seven in 2021 and 2022 and eight in 2023 and 2024 to break the old record of wins for a class by five.
CMS also bookended its 2024 season with 24-0 shutout wins, opening the year by winning by the exact same score against Chicago.
Edwards broke the CMS career rushing record last week with a single-game record 324 yards against Cal Lutheran, surpassing the single-game record of 274, held by Garrett Cheadle, and the career record of 4044, held by Ryan Gocong (1998-2001). With his 208 yards on Saturday, Edwards finishes his four seasons with 4314 yards, including a career-best 1228 yards this year.
Edwards opened the scoring with a three-yard touchdown run with 9:06 left in the first quarter, and then he broke free for a 62-yard run with 5:30 left in the second quarter, his longest run of the season. Senior
Walter Kuhlenkamp connected with senior
Daniel Rosenberg on a 65-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, and senior kicker
Rich Brutto finished off the scoring with a 46-yard field goal.
CMS will graduate 21 seniors as it tries to continue its run of success next year, including Edwards, Kuhlenkamp and four-fifths of the offensive line that have blocked for them:
Owen Benjamin,
Bryce Mey,
Andre Nesbit and
Gavin Smithson, as well as tight end
Kobey Jorgensen.
The starting wide receiver group of
Anderson Cynkar,
Mason Cotton and Rosenberg will also need to be replaced, as well as 10 regular contributors on defense (Asta, Littlefield,
Caleb Chang,
Austin Andersen,
Elijah Costa,
George Skaff,
Kirby Baynes,
Thanio Bright,
Addison Reddinger and
Jacob O'Connell), who combined for 33 tackles on Saturday against Redlands.
