CMS Women's Basketball Falls on Late Three-Pointer to George Fox

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team took undefeated George Fox down to the final seconds, but Alyssa Wells broke a 46-46 tie with a three-pointer with 2.2 seconds left to give the Bruins a 49-46 win over the Athenas on Friday night at Roberts Pavilion.

With the win, George Fox improves to 4-0 on the young season, while CMS sees its record level at 2-2.

Katie Resendiz and Renee Chong each had 16 points to lead the Athenas, while Ava Grey grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. The Bruins held a 45-29 edge on the boards overall, and the Athenas had a chance despite not making a three-pointer on the evening, ending up 0-19 from beyond the arc as a team.

The Athenas led by as many as nine in the third quarter, the second time when Tanya Ghai drove in for a layup to make the score 30-21. Then Bruins then went on an 8-0 run and the game remained close the rest of the way. Chong put the Athenas up 38-33 with a layup, but Wells hit a three to close the gap to 38-36 heading into the fourth.

Wells had a three-point play with 2:51 to go to give the Bruins their first second-half lead at 46-45, and then hit the final three-pointer to break a 46-46 tie to keep George Fox undefeated.

CMS will be back in action on Sunday when it hosts Trinity for a 2 p.m. contest.
