CMS Volleyball Falls to Emory in NCAA Regional Semifinals

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team dropped the first set in extra points and ended up falling in three sets, 26-24, 25-20, 25-19 to regional host Emory on Friday at Woodruff Arena.

The loss ends the CMS season with a 22-7 record, while Emory, which is ranked No. 6 in the nation, improves to 28-2 and will move on to face Trinity in the NCAA Regional finals.

Brooke McKee led CMS with 10 kills, one day after setting a new career high with 27 in a five-set win over Transylvania. She ended the season with 394 kills, which ties for eighth on the CMS single-season list.

Dede Carranza had 23 digs to finish her career atop the CMS record books with 2176, surpassing the old mark of 2121 which was set by Megan Coleman (2011-14). Her 629 digs this season places second all-time at CMS, behind only the 749 that Coleman had a senior in 2014.

Georgia McGovern had 33 assists to end her career with 3823, second all-time for the Athenas, including 1086 this season, which is third all-time for the Athenas, behind only the 1257 from Natalya Preiser in 1992 and the 1195 that McGovern tallied last year. McGovern also added a service ace to end atop the CMS leaderboard with 221 in her career, including 73 this year, which ranks second behind Caroline Vlasis' school mark of 86 set in 1993.

A kill from Brenna Bell put CMS up 22-21 in the first set, and another kill from Solvej Eversoll made it 23-22. Emory earned back-to-back kills for a set point, which was erased by a kill from Dani Beder, but the Eagles got the next two points, taking the set on a block from Alana Dawson and Madison Cail.

The second set saw the Eagles roar out to an 11-2 lead after a 7-0 run, but the Athenas were able to come all the way back to 16-14 after a block from McKee and Eversoll. Emory was able to hold CMS off, though, getting the final two points for a 25-20 win after a McKee kill had gotten the Athenas within three.

CMS fell in another hole early in the third set, as Emory took a 9-4 lead, but the Athenas used a 4-0 run, keyed by two straight kills from Bell and a McGovern ace to close to within 13-12. A  Bell and Beder block brought CMS within 17-15 before a 4-0 Emory run put the Eagles on the cusp of the win. The Athenas had one final rally, as Beder had a kill, Ashley Murashige had an ace, and Shae Delany added a kill to make it 21-18, and a Beder kill kept it 22-19, before Emory closed with three kills in a row for the win.

The Athenas will look to get back to the national stage again next year, but will need to replace some key pieces from its senior class, which won regionals in 2021 and 2023, and were ranked No. 1 in the nation for 10 weeks in 2022. The seven-member class includes McGovern at setter, Carranza at libero, Bell at right-side hitter, Beder, Kelsey Polhemus and Lauren Parker in the middle, and Murashige at defensive specialist.
