CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior running
Justin Edwards earned a spot on the D3football.com All-Region first team, while senior linebacker
Joey Asta captured third-team honors, the website announced this morning.
Edwards finished his CMS career as the all-time record holder with 4314 rushing yards, as well as 55 rushing touchdowns (and 56 overall touchdowns, including one receiving). He ran for a career-best 1228 yards this season, averaging 122.8 per game and 5.4 yards per carry, while scoring 12 touchdowns. His season totals also included a 324-yard rushing performance in a win over Cal Lutheran, which broke the CMS record for a single game by 50 yards.
Asta ended the season with a career-high 70 tackles, 40 of which were solo. He also tallied six sacks for 24 yards in losses, and returned an interception for a touchdown, while forcing one fumble and recovering another. He had a season-high 13 tackles against Chapman, and had two sacks in wins over Cal Lutheran and Redlands.
The Stags finished the year with an 8-2 record for the second season in a row, tying the school record for wins in a season first set in 1970 and matched in 1986. Asta and Edwards were part of the winningest class in program history, tallying 30 wins over the last four seasons, which was five more than any previous four-year stretch at CMS.
Edwards and Asta will now both be eligible for D3football.com All-America honors, which will be announced on Jan. 2.
