CLAREMONT, Calif. -
James Gomez scored a first-half goal for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team, but Luther was able to knot in the second half as the Stags played to a 1-1 tie on Friday evening in the season opener for both teams.
Gomez scored just under 20 minutes into the game for CMS, as he got on the back end of a through ball from
Tommy Brown. The play began with
Rafael Otero on the left sideline, who played a short ball to
Nico Del Villar. Del Villar then centered it to Brown, who one-timed it though the middle of the box, and Gomez was able to one-time a low left-footed shot inside the far post from 12 yards out.
Miles Demarest was tested for the Stags in goal on a long free kick midway through the first half, but was able to come up with the save.
However, the Norse were able to pull even at the 56:47 mark of the second half, when Raul Ferrandez was able to cut back into the middle of the field just outside the penalty area, and hit a hard shot inside the left post to even the score.
The score ended up deadlocked after CMS had a couple of late chances on corner kicks, but was unable to convert. The Stags finished with a 13-5 edge in shots, and a 7-2 edge in shots on goal, as well as a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow for a 7 p.m. game against Bethesda.
