CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Rafael Otero scored two goals for the second time this week to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Wheaton (Ill.) on Thursday evening at Pritzlaff Field.
With the win, CMS improves to 4-0-1 this season, including four wins in a row, with Otero scoring the game-winner in each of the last three. He had the second goal in a 3-1 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday and then scored twice against No. 1 St. Olaf on Monday, breaking a 2-2 tie in the second half of a 3-2 win. Wheaton slips to 1-3 with the loss.
Otero scored the first goal in the closing minutes of the first half when
Gray Mollenkamp threaded the needle and found him just outside the middle of the penalty area. Otero then moved to his left into the box, spun back to his right and fired a shot inside the right post for his fourth goal of the season.
In the second half, Otero made it a 2-0 game with his fifth goal of the year.
Collin Ross got to a crossing pass at the far post and headed the ball back into the middle of the penalty area. Otero got on the back end of it and took one quick dribble before firing a shot into the lower-left corner from 12 yards out.
Miles Demarest had two saves to get the shutout, both of which were in the first half to keep the game scoreless, tipping a shot off the crossbar in the seventh minute and coming up with a reflex save to deny a low shot in the 41st minute, one minute before Otero put the Stags ahead.
CMS finished with a 14-7 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. The Stags will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Cal Lutheran to open SCIAC play.
