THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran scored four goals on only six shot attempts, including all three shots it took in the first half, as the Kingsmen defeated No. 14 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 4-2 on Wednesday evening at Rolland Stadium.
The loss was the first of the season for CMS, which slips to 4-1-1 on the year, while Cal Lutheran improves to 2-3-1 with the win.
John Laidlaw and
James Gomez scored second-half goals for CMS, which held a 17-6 edge in shots on the day but fell victim to an opportunistic Cal Lutheran team that went ahead 2-0 before the game was eight minutes old. Joel Wallin scored 2:01 into the game for the first one and then JP Megloza converted a penalty kick at the 7:48 mark.
After Cal Lutheran went ahead 3-0 at the break, Laidlaw, who was seeing his first action of the season after missing the first five games with an injury, scored his first goal of the year just 4:14 into the second half to give the Stags some hope, converting off a pass from
Christopher Kim.
However, Cal Lutheran got the goal back at the 67:57 mark to stretch the lead back up to 4-1.
James Gomez's goal in the 88th minute off an assist from
Liam Hall closed the gap to 4-2, but the Stags could come no closer.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Chapman for a 7 p.m. contest.
