CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Rafael Otero had his third two-goal game of the season, and
James Gomez set up all three goals with two assists and a drawn penalty kick, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team bounced back from its first defeat of the season with a 3-0 win over Chapman on Saturday evening.
With the win, CMS improves to 5-1-1 on the year after falling to Cal Lutheran on Wednesday in its SCIAC opener 4-2 (in a game it held a 17-6 advantage in shots). Chapman falls to 1-5-1 overall and 0-2 in the SCIAC with the loss.
John Laidlaw scored the opening goal for CMS, his second goal in two games since returning from an injury, while Otero scored once in each half to extend his season total to seven in six games played.
Gomez set up the first goal in the 31st minute when he beat a defender along the end line to the left of the net. He sent a low cross to the top of the six-yard box, and Laidlaw was able to deflect it in with his back to goal for the eventual game-winner.
Just over six minutes later, Gomez picked up his second assist after he got on the back of a long diagonal ball from
Eric Grossman-Glover. Gomez was able to beat a defender, and send a low pass into the middle of the box to Otero. Otero then stopped on a dime and spun back to his right foot before burying a shot into the left side of the net.
In the second half, Gomez was able to get a ball in the box with a head of steam and push it past the Chapman goalkeeper, who committed a foul trying to stop him from getting a clean look at the empty net. Otero took the ensuing penalty kick and slotted it in for his second goal of the contest.
Miles Demarest played just over 81 minutes and had three saves, with
Nate Kim closing out to combine on the shutout. CMS ended the game with a 16-7 edge in shots, similar to its advantage against Cal Lutheran on Wednesday, but this time with a more satisfying result.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night when it hosts Redlands for a 7 p.m. contest.
