CLAREMONT, Calif. -
James Gomez broke a scoreless tie in the 73rd minute with a 25-yard blast off the left post and in, and
John Laidlaw followed four minutes later with his third goal in the last three games as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team picked up a 2-0 home win over Redlands on Wednesday night at Pritzlaff Field.
With the win, CMS moves to 6-1-1 on the season and 2-1 in the SCIAC, while Redlands falls to 4-2-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The Stags had been knocking on the door before breaking the ice, including a shot off the crossbar from
Shaan Malik in the 63rd minute and a pair of shots from
Nico Del Villar that were saved by Redlands goalie Brady Bachman.
Gomez, though, was able to get the Stags on the board when he took a short pass from
Rafael Otero outside the box, turned to his right, and rifled a shot that hit off the inside of the left post and went in to make it a 1-0 game with 17:48 to play.
Just under four minutes later (3:59), Laidlaw made it a 2-0 game with a header, as he got on the back end of a perfectly-weighted cross from
Jacoby Lockman and was able to snap a header from the top of the six-yard box, giving him three goals in three SCIAC games since returning to the lineup.
Miles Demarest had five saves to get the shutout in goal for the Stags, in a game that saw each team take 12 shots and the Bulldogs hold a 6-5 edge in corners.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Whittier for a 7 p.m. contest.
