ST. LOUIS, Mo. -
Shae Delany had a career-high 18 kills, including one on match point up 24-23 in the fourth, as the No. 9 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team earned a 25-8, 25-14, 21-25, 25-23 win over No. 5 Trinity (Texas) on Friday in a top-10 showdown at the East-West Battle hosted by WashU.
CMS improves to 3-1 on the young season with the win, after opening with a 2-1 record at the Pacific Coast Classic last weekend.
Brenna Bell added 13 kills, hitting .455,
Brooke McKee had a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs,
Georgia McGovern had 48 assists and
Dede Carranza tallied 28 digs.
Delany, who also had 13 digs for her first career double-double, played behind National Player of the Year
Jenna Holmes a year ago as a first-year, and moved into the starting line-up this season. She recorded a high of nine kills against Centre last weekend, but doubled that against Trinity, including the final one to put the match away at 24-23 in the third.
CMS appeared to be on its way to an easy win after taking the first two sets in dominant fashion, but Trinity responded to take the third and were deadlocked 18-18 with CMS in the fourth. Bell put the Athenas ahead to stay with a kill, which was followed by a Delany ace. After the Tigers got one point back, Bell had two kills in a row to give CMS a three-point lead at 22-19.
Dani Beder answered a Trinity block with a kill to make it 23-20, but Trinity earned the next two points to cut the lead to one. McKee gave the Athenas two match points with a kill to make it 24-22, and Delany finished off the match on the second try to close out the 25-23 win.
CMS came out on fire, opening with a Delany kill, which was followed by a Bell block and a McGovern ace to make it 4-0. After Trinity got on the board, a 5-0 CMS run made it 9-1, which included two Bell kills, a Delany kill and an ace, and a
Kelsey Polhemus kill. The Athenas grew their lead up to 18-3, and then closed out on a 3-0 run with McGovern adding another ace to make it a 25-8 first set win, as the Athenas hit .480 in the set, compared to -.036 for Trinity.
CMS hit .477 in the second set on its way to a 25-14 win, using a 6-0 run to turn a 14-9 advantage into a 20-9 lead. McKee and Bell each had two kills during the run.
Beder finished with nine kills, hitting .381 for the Athenas, while McGovern finished with five aces.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow for two more matches, taking on Tufts and Emory.
