CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Sun Young Byun won three individual events (200 free, 100 fly, 400 IM) and contributed to a medley relay win as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team earned a 209-90 win over Cal Lutheran, and a 248-28 win over La Verne in a double dual meet on Saturday at Axelrood Pool.
Kelly Prawira added a breaststroke sweep for the Athenas, which also won both backstroke events, both distance events, both diving events and both relays as it improved to 7-2 overall on the year, including 6-1 in SCIAC meets.
Izzy Doud opened the day with a win in the three-meter dive for the Athenas, tallying 296.35 points. She then finished a close second later in the one-meter dive, behind teammate
Meilan Uyeno, who broke 300 with a 303.40, defeating Doud by just 7.35 points.
The first swimming event saw CMS go 1-2 in the 200-yard medley relay, with
Annika Sharma,
Mackenzie Mayfield, Byun and
Madeleine Kan taking the win in 1:48.62. The CMS B team of
Samantha Ennis,
Milan Manfredi,
Praise Okodogbe and
Annette Chang came in second in 1:51.05.
Katy Shaw won the first individual race of the meet, winning a close battle over teammate
Avalon Sanders in the 1000 free, with Shaw finishing just .62 ahead (10:41.12 to 10:41.74).
Allison Nguyen made it a distance sweep later in the meet with a strong time of 5:08.85, winning by almost 10 seconds over Kendall Moffitt of Cal Lutheran.
Byun then picked up her first individual win in the 200 free, clocking a 1:55.63 to win by just over three seconds ahead of Sharma. She added a 56.96 win in the 100 fly, with Mayfield second (57.55) and Kan third, and capped off her 3-for-3 performance in individual events with a 4:39.86 in the 400 IM, as
Revere Schmidt was second and
Nika Makhervaks third.
Prawira earned her first win in the 100 breast, finishing in 1:07.53, as Mayfield came in second. She then added a 200 breast win as well in 2:26.11, with Manfredi coming in second and Schmidt in third.
Ennis took the 100 back in 1:01.27, to lead another 1-2-3 CMS finish, as Kan was second in 1:02.05 and Chang third in 1:02.36. Werts made it a back sweep in the 200 with a 2:10.46, edging out Ennis by 1.5 seconds.
CMS capped off the meet by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay, as Nguyen, Mayfield, Kan and Chang finished first in 1:37.91, taking it by just over three seconds.
The Athenas will be back in action in two weeks when they travel to Redlands for the final SCIAC regular season meet of the season. CMS will be back at home on Feb. 8 for the CMS Invitational, the final tune-up before the SCIAC Championships.
