THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team scored 48 points in the first half to take four-point lead into the break, but was held to 27 in the second half, as Cal Lutheran pulled away for a 93-75 win over the Athenas on Wednesday evening at Gilbert Arena.
Renee Chong had 25 points and
Ruva Kiara added 13 on 6-6 shooting for CMS, which slips to 5-10 overall and 1-4 in the SCIAC with the loss. Cal Lutheran moves to 12-4 overall and 4-3 in the SCIAC with the win.
Kaiya Mack led all scorers with 28 for Cal Lutheran.
Katie Resendiz and
Grace Florendo were each in double figures for the Athenas with 10.
CMS led by as many as 11 in the first half, when
Kayla Ishibashi scored on a driving lay-up to put the Athenas ahead 36-25. Cal Lutheran clawed back to within two, but Resendiz capped off the half with a jumper to give CMS a 48-44 lead at intermission.
The Regals took their first lead of the second half at 52-50, before Florendo answered with a three-pointer to put CMS back in front 53-52. Kiara scored her sixth field goal to get CMS within 61-58 with 1:47 left in the third, before the Regals took a 63-58 lead heading into the fourth.
Cal Lutheran then scored 30 points in the fourth to pull away, with Mack scoring to make it 71-60 with 7:09 to go. An Ishibashi jumper made it 75-64 with 5:42 to go, but Cal Lutheran then went on a 10-0 run to seal it.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Pomona-Pitzer for a 5 p.m. contest.
