CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Matteo Quadrini scored the tying goal six minutes after falling behind to give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team a 1-1 tie with SCIAC-leading Chapman on Wednesday evening at Pritzlaff Field.
With the draw, CMS moves to 2-5-4 overall and 1-2-2 in the SCIAC, while Chapman remains undefeated in league play at 3-0-2, while moving to 4-2-3 overall.
A hand ball in the box gave Chapman a penalty kick at the 56:11 mark and Reed Leidlein was able to slot it home to give the Panthers the 1-0 lead.
Just 6:32 later, CMS brought things level again as
Alex Sondergaard made a run up the right sideline and sent a cross into the box.
Atticus English was the first one to it, but intentionally let it run through his legs after drawing several Chapman defenders. The ball then rolled across to the weak side, where Quadrini was unmarked, and he sent a 15-yard blast into the net to level the score.
Miles Demarest had three saves and was tested late on a shot by Conner Kilde with 3:30 to go, but he was able to make a diving stop in front of the right post. Leidlein had the last chance for the Panthers with just under a minute left, missing wide of the left post. CMS drew a throw-in with 20 seconds left and sent
Bo Gardner into the corner to make a long throw into the box, but Chapman was able to head it away as time expired.
Chapman held a 7-5 edge in shots as neither team was able to generate much offense over the 90 minutes.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts La Verne for a 7 p.m. contest.
