CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Brooke McKee had 14 kills and 10 digs, moving within 12 kills of reaching the 1000 plateau, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team moved back into second place in the SCIAC with a 25-20, 25-22, 25-16 win over Whittier on Friday evening.
With the win, CMS improves to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in the SCIAC, passing Whittier (12-6, 4-2 SCIAC) for second place in the league standings.
Shae Delany and
Mia Urosevic each had 13 digs for the Athenas, while
Hayden Lin had 17 assists.
CMS used a 4-0 run to go ahead 17-10 in the first set, keyed by a block from
Anna Ryan and
Solvej Eversoll. CMS got ahead 24-15 after a
Hayden Lin ace, before Whittier fought off five set points to get back within 24-20. After a timeout, Eversoll finished off a quick set from Lin in the middle for a 25-20 first set win.
The second set saw CMS use a 7-0 run to take an early 9-2 lead after a pair of kills from McKee and a pair of blocks from
Stella Gajar. Whittier clawed back in it, and got within one point on three occasions, the last at 22-21. Delany and McKee had consecutive kills to get it to 24-21, and after Whittier fought off one set point, Eversoll had her second set-clinching kill to put CMS ahead 2-0 in the match.
Whittier went ahead 4-1 in the third set, but CMS used a 4-0 run to go ahead 11-7 on two service aces from McKee. An ace from
Skye Dunn made it 14-8, and another Dunn ace finished off a 4-0 run for the Athenas to make the final score of the third set 25-16.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it crosses Sixth Street to take on Pomona-Pitzer at 4 p.m. McKee enters the match with 988 career kills, needing just 12 to join the 1000-kill club.
